How to Decorate with a Modern Moana Island Vibe

Modern Moana Decor: How to Decorate with an Island Vibe • Little Gold Pixel

OK, guys, so the first time I saw the movie “Moana,” I fell in love with the flick. The music, the story, and, most overwhelmingly, the setting.

It’s no secret that I have an affinity for the ocean, Hawaii, island life in general, Polynesian islands in particular. “Moana” nailed that island vibe for me and had me daydreaming about booking another trip, perhaps to Bora Bora this time.

Naturally, like an ocean junkie needing my fix, I had to see the movie again on the big screen. This time I came home and started a mood board full of decor.

What if Moana were a modern-day woman like you and me, and she had to decorate her living room? What would it look like?

Some inspiration comes straight from the movie, some from my trips to Hawaii. This is like the Pei Wei of rooms. There’s a little bit of everything here. It’s all vaguely Polynesian, but I’m not going to win any awards for authenticity here.

I imagine this room to be an indoor-outdoor situation, half of it opening up onto a tropical breeze lanai that overlooks the ocean.

Daydream with me a little bit, why don’t you?

I love to mix and match wood tones. For those of you who are scared to do so, here’s a quick guide on how to mix woods. In this case, I was drawn to the airiness of rattan juxtaposed against the dark Sheesham wood. Lots of pattern mixing with blue, green and yellow accents.

Not sure if you can tell well from the moodboard, but the bright blue pillow on the far right of the couch is a gorgeous, non-cheesy Moana pattern that Disney put on products on Zazzle (including this pillow, of course).

A few other fun Moana accents for fans of the film: a sea turtle bowl to represent the turtle Moana saves on the beach when she was a baby, and a crab sculpture to represent Tamatoa, the David Bowie-inspired “Shiny” crab in the film.

I loved the rug for it’s subtle resemblance to Maui’s tattoos. And the shimmery abstract art reminds me of the line from the song “How Far I’ll Go” (See the light as it shines on the sea/It’s blinding).

Here’s a breakdown of where you find everything (by number):

Free Beatles Heart Valentine Printable

Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that sneaks up on me every year because I’m so “meh” about it, and then at the last second I scramble to design something because Valentine’s is infectious.

It’s Feb. 12. I’ve finally got the fever. So here’s your valentine printable for 2017, friends!

Free Beatles Heart Valentine Printable • Little Gold Pixel

This is a little sketch I doodled for fun on my iPad, and of course it’s a Beatles lyric. Would you expect anything less from me?

My Dad and I used to sing this song in harmony when I was in high school. The cool thing is that now that he is living with us in our new home, I can get him to sing with me any time I like.

Fun fact: I sing John’s part and Dad sings Paul’s part. That’s the way we roll on all Beatles songs.

This valentine printable is in red, but I accidentally printed one in grayscale and thought it was kind of dapper. You can do the same if you want some variety.

The template is pretty simple. You just print, cut along the heart areas better than I did, fold in half, trim up the edges that do not quite match, and voila — Love, love me, do. You’ve got yourself a nifty little valentine printable heart to give to your sweeties.

Trend Spotting: 20 Ways to Rock the Marble Trend

Trend Spotting: 20 Ways to Rock the Marble Trend • Little Gold Pixel

Sometimes a trend has to slap you in the face for you to fully appreciate it, and that’s the way it has been for me with the marble trend.

If you trust my Googling skills, this trend started in 2014-2015, which in trend time means it’s gliding on fumes at this point. A shell of its former glory. Sputtering to the finish line.

I don’t see any evidence of this, though. Quite the contrary. Marble is everywhere, and why not? It’s maybe the most classic trend I’ve seen this century. Does marble ever really go out of style? My friends the ancient Greeks and Romans say not.

But back to the marble trend slapping me in the face.

It happened after I came across a “marble” section three online stores in a row — it’s not a trend until you count it thrice — and I realized that yes, I do in fact desperately need a marble iPhone case.

Here are 19 other items you might need in marble, as well.

How to Hang Gallery Walls Without Nails

How to Hang Gallery Walls Without Nails • Little Gold Pixel

I hear from people all the time who are trying to hang gallery walls without nails.

In fact, this is one of the most frequent emails I receive.

If you are a renter, you are probably all too familiar with landlords who request that you do not use nails to hang art. Such a silly rule, but if you want to see your full deposit returned, it’s one that you nonetheless obey.

I live in Southern California and likely will be a renter as long as I live here (or until I win the lottery), so I know the renter’s plight and I have a few options that just might work for you.

How to Hang Gallery Walls Without Nails

Here are my three easy methods for nail-free gallery walls.

1. Washi Tape

How to Hang Gallery Walls Without Nails • Little Gold Pixel

I love this option for kids rooms, dorm rooms, or for any room you will change art with any frequency. My daughter loves to hang up her art du jour, and washi tape is super noninvasive. Don’t expect your gallery wall to last years without a washi tape touchup, but if your wall is left undisturbed, you can enjoy for several months without having to reapply tape.

Best part: So many cute washi tape options out there

Best for: Smooth, non-textured walls

Best use: Make “frames” out of the tape first, then put your art inside the “frames”

Vibe: Remember putting NKOTB (or insert your favorite boy band) posters on the wall with Scotch tape? Like this, but better.

2. Command Strips

How to Hang Gallery Walls Without Nails • Little Gold Pixel

I recommend two versions of these: the velcro and the hook. We used the hooks for our previous bathroom gallery wall, and since we just moved, I can attest to the fact that they were easy to remove and didn’t rip up the paint. Make sure you follow the instructions before applying to the wall (I believe you need to make sure your wall is super clean).

Best part: Your gallery wall looks legit like you used nails

Best for: Works like a charm on textured walls; I would stay away from matte or super chalky finishes just because I’m wary of the peel-off factor

Best use: Hooks are easy; read this post to help you figure out the velcro gallery wall; plus, check out the many Command options (they are always adding new products); a fun idea: velcro strip some clipboards and hang them up to make a unique, easy-to-change gallery wall like in the photo above

Vibe: Like a decor magician who used slight of hand to hang some profesh-looking walls

3. Propped Bulletin Board or Mesh Grid

via UO

This is one of the options I am dying to try myself, especially the mesh grid. This is a completely wall-free option. All you need the wall to do is prop up your art! (If you want to make sure your grid doesn’t move, use a Command hook to keep it in place.) Get a large size cork board to maximize the impact, try 5 feet by 3 feet.

Best part: Your gallery wall is portable, and the art is super interchangeable

Best for: Renters with delicate walls, crumbly walls, or super finicky landlords

Best use: Buy some cool gold bulldog clips for the grid or cubicle clips for the cork board to hang your art; you can even hang plants from the grid (!)

Vibe: Way too cool for school. Like making “fetch” happen.

Free Women’s March Posters & Where to Download Them

Girls Just Wanna Have Fundamental Human Rights

My Instagram feed lately has been flush with excellent poster designs, most free for the taking. The goal? To spread awareness of the Women’s March on Washington this weekend, and to provide protest signs for those taking part.

In my opinion this march is a no-brainer. Women’s rights = human rights. It pains me to sit out the actual march, though, because of a knee injury. And yet, in some small way, at least I can spread the word via free posters.

I can print one out and hang it on my wall, and I can watch while my friends speak up on my behalf (some literally on my behalf, as they’re carrying a sign for me!).

If you’re interested in finding a sister event in your city, check the Women’s March site.

Free Women’s March Posters

Find the posters at their respective download links. I’m sharing my favorite free Women’s March poster designs, but do click through and check out all the other options. There are so many, and so many are amazing.

Additionally, if you have a dollar or more to spare to donate to the cause, you might want to check out the posters at Hello Lucky. I especially like the “I Will Not Go Quietly Back to the 1950s” sign.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Free Quote Printable

Martin Luther King Jr. Quote • Free Printable • Little Gold Pixel

Is it just me, or do Martin Luther King Jr. quotes feel especially relevant this year?

Just to clarify, I’ve always been inspired by his wisdom. His words were always beautiful thoughts that filled a historical tapestry in my mind. This is where we’ve been. Let’s make sure we keep our eyes on where we’re going.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

But coming fresh off a year that unveiled so much in-your-face hate, it’s now apparent to me that I used to live in a childlike ideal world.

This was a world in which equality and basic human rights were being improved year by year. And, even though there were struggles, the overall progress was toward something better than before.

I must’ve been the sole inhabitant of this fictitious world. Maybe a handful of you lived there with me. Gah, wasn’t 2016 a rude awakening for us dreamers?

We had taken so many steps forward. But then not only did we take steps backward, we fell flat on our collective ass.

And man, do I feel powerless.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

I can’t stop our newly “elected” government from doing whatever terrible things it plans on doing (there are so many terrible plans I don’t even know where to start).

I can’t stop human rights atrocities half a world away.

I’m not even sure I can do much to stop the hate coursing through the veins of my Facebook feed.

But I will try.

As Dr. King said:

The time is always right to do what is right.

30 Free Inspirational Quotes to Help You Kill It This Year

30 Free Inspirational Quotes to Help You Kill It This Year • Little Gold Pixel

Happy New Year, everyone! Now that the glitter has been swept up and the cheese/wine/candy hangover is almost over, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty.

I’m talking resolutions, goals, kicking ass, what have you.

What are you working on this year? Are you focusing on something professional or something personal? (Share in the comments!)

As for me, some of you may know that I recently decided to go full-force freelance/entrepreneur, which means I’m setting the pressure level to 11.

30 Free Inspirational Quotes to Help You Kill It This Year • Little Gold Pixel

It’s a self-imposed pressure level, but I’m a firm believer in giving it my all. For years, I gave my employer my all — 100% of my best energy— and now it’s time to see what I can accomplish if I turn that energy toward my own goals and dreams.

Are you excited? I’m soooo excited.

This being said, I fully anticipate that there will be days when it will be all I can do to drag myself out of bed after a setback or after making a costly mistake.

I’m told that mistakes are bound to happen despite my best efforts, and in my case I’m sure it will have something to do with advertising or marketing or something similarly business-related that falls outside my wheelhouse.

So as a pre-emptive measure, I’ve rounded up 30 free inspirational quotes. These are my faves, the ones that give me a little oomph to do some goal crushing.

I thought you might want to print them out and rotate them on your desk, too.
