Behind the Scenes: Cactus Art Printable Video

Welcome to my first “backstage” post. The is the first video I’ve ever made (surprise! welcome to 2007!). And I’ve finally created a YouTube channel.

If all goes well, and assuming I don’t fall down a rabbit hole of editing videos, I’ll try to share process videos — and eventually tutorials — often.

For this cactus art printable video, I just hit “record” and started creating something from scratch. I sped up the video substantially so you wouldn’t die of boredom or roll your eyes while I change fonts 60 times.

If you’re really paying attention, you’ll notice that I switched fonts one more time after ending my video. Chronically indecisive, that’s me.

The printable is available for download in the stop. Oh, and make sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel to stay up to date on future videos.

Now that I’m creating videos, I thought this would be a good time to open up the floor for questions. Do you have any design problems you’d like to solve? Anything you’d like to see explained in a tutorial?

It’s amazing how a two-second video clip can be a highlight of your day. Because sometimes words just do not do a situation justice. And because sometimes, if you don’t laugh you’ll cry.

For example …

When you’re working like crazy only to notice how late it’s gotten, it’s like:

When you read comments on anything to do with the Confederate flag or gay rights or any number of hot-button, pretty obvious issues, only to discover that Moron Disease is rampant in society, it’s like:

When you’re explaining something easy to your 4-year-old but they throw you a random follow-up question like “what’s nuclear fission?” it’s like:

Every single time “Pump Up the Jam” plays, it’s like:

(That song never gets old, admit it.)

When you daydream about that last summer vacation in college when you were young and fresh and still didn’t know what to do with your life, it’s like:

When you’ve been counting calories for a month and you are so hungry you could gnaw on your own hand, it’s like:

When you realize that Friday, July 3, is “Independence Day Observed,” it’s like:

When your kid tells you the meal you painstakingly prepared is “yucky” and smells like “poo-poo,” it’s like:

When you’re trying to get just a few more steps to register on your FitBit for the day, it’s like:

When you realize you’ve watched nearly every episode of Orange Is the New Black, and it isn’t as good as last season, but you have to keep watching anyway because BINGE WATCHING!, it’s like:

When the plastic flamingo designer’s death hits you irrationally hard, it’s like:

When you find an email buried in your inbox that you should’ve responded to eons ago, it’s like:

When you wake up after falling asleep on the couch, it’s like:

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

A few weeks ago I mainlined “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” on Netflix.

(If you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for? Get on that!)

The show reinforced my love for Tina Fey, and the situations were hilarious and on point, like I’ve come to expect from her comedic genius. The thing that’s stuck with me, though?

That theme song!

P.S. I could watch that show again (“30 Rock” included, of course).

When you honestly assess the items in your refrigerator, it’s like:

When you stare down the person driving a car that approaches just as you and your daughter cross the street, it’s like:

When you race to shut the blinds after getting out of the shower, it’s like you’re imagining people outside your window like:

When you can feel your blood pressure rising by reading the comments section of a controversial article, it’s like:

When you walk across the office to talk to someone in person only to find out they are on the phone — but they signal you to wait so it would be awkward to leave, it’s like:

I was catching up with my DVR when I noticed something exciting.

There are several freaking hilarious sitcoms on primetime this year!

I can’t remember the last time I ever thought that. Sure, there are always one or two really good ones. But now there are at least three that I can’t wait to watch every week: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Goldbergs and Blackish. What are your favorite sitcoms from this year?

My all-time favorite is Seinfeld. Yours?

P.P.S. 10 TV series you must see & 9 TV series to binge watch.

When you keep getting random calls for “the doctor” on your work phone (true story), it’s like:

When you manage to leave your house without being in a rush for the first time in weeks, it’s like:

When you didn’t see the same colors on #thedress as everyone else did, it was like:

When faced with an invitation to go to a potentially awkward soiree, it’s like:

When you can’t find the phone that’s clearly sitting a foot from you, it’s like:

Our favorite thing to do at the end of the day is watch DVR’d episodes of the 1960s Batman TV show starring Adam West.

If you haven’t watched this show, you are flat missing out. It’s hilarious, and campy, and so incredibly appealing. If it’s been awhile since you’ve seen this show, hurry up and watch it again. It holds up. Run, don’t walk. As Batman would do.

Unlike Batman, though, don’t allow yourself to get turned into a pineapple Frosty Freezie.

Ever since I wrote about the plethora of memes on my husband’s phone, something strange has happened.

There are now FIVE memes in my camera roll, which is a lot considering I used to have ZERO. Something must’ve snapped in me when I was making fun (in the nicest way) of H’s meme hoarding problem. I’m like the child who makes silly faces at strangers only to have it get “stuck” that way.

When you almost chip in your valid two cents on an out-of-control comment thread, it’s like:

When you envision how you looked dancing on stage in high school, it’s like:

But the reality was probably more like:

When you remember that couch you had to chop in two because you couldn’t get it out the door, it’s like:

When a 3-year-old wants you to pick her up, you know it’ll be like:

When you think back on the most questionable fashion of your youth, you have to admit it’s the crop top you wore in junior high, like:

When both you and your husband stay calm through five minutes of a screaming threenager, otherwise known as a Time Out, it’s like:

When you remember that time you were in a rock band, it’s like:

Scary Stories that Creep You Out

We were talking tonight about scary stories, and things that happened to us when we were kids. My husband shared a story about how one of his friends kicked a soccer ball into a drain, and a shady man appeared out of nowhere and stole it. The man had horns.

Do you have remember any creepy stories from your youth? Either ones that were told to you or that you experienced?

I’ve always loved to be scared.

Is that strange?

I always liked the thrill of a scary story or movie, but they would disturb me. Often I would run into my bedroom, jumping into bed, cautious of letting my ankles get within arm’s reach of the bed out of fear the boogeyman would grab them.

I would never act scared, though. I would be stoic even though I was trembling inside. I was under the impression that monsters should never sense your fear because they might be attracted to it.

My friend Tobie was the best at telling what she said were true ghost stories. She has since proven to be an amazing actress and is now a drama teacher, so it was difficult to determine where reality ended and fantasy began with her. All I can say is that these stories were incredibly detailed.

I wish I could remember one now to share with you. Slumber parties at her house were always chilling. We would all be in bed, complete darkness, when she would set in on a tale.

There were always sound effects and unexplained noises that accompanied her stories, which added to the authenticity. Generally we would scream at the end and giggle like, well, little girls, acting like we would shake off the fright with laughter.

Then I’d be in for a pretty spooky night of staring into the darkness and hoping I wouldn’t get pulled into oblivion by some malevolent force.

Scary Stories that Creep You Out • Little Gold Pixel

It’s pretty easy to spook me.

For a period of time in the 1980s the theme song to “The Hitchhiker” sent chills down my spine.

Don’t even get me started on the sleepless night I had after watching Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

Halloween presented a whole other can of spooky worms for our neighborhood. There was always that one house we weren’t supposed to approach. Rumors abounded.

At one point we were under the impression that a disfigured person (a la Chunk from The Goonies) lived there. Another time the entire family was rumored to be child killers.

I’m sure they were lovely people, but they kept eerily quiet on Halloween, and we were kids. So we scared ourselves silly with idiotic “dares” to go ring the doorbell or sneak a peek into a window.

No one ever made it up to the door. We were all a fright away from wetting ourselves.

I just spent the better part of an hour reading creepy short stories online. I’m OK for the time being, but after I watch The Walking Dead it’ll probably be a jump-into-bed kind of night.

“What are you watching, Mama?”

The way I was grinning at my iPhone piqued her curiosity, so much so that she hopped out the bathtub just to see what all the fuss was about. I was watching that oh-so-nostalgic cartoon, The Skeleton Dance. For a second I wondered whether she would be spooked by skeletons dancing, but as it turns out, 3½-year-olds think skeletons are absolutely hilarious.

It got me thinking about other Halloween videos I could conjure up for her viewing pleasure. I went back through my childhood and beyond to unearth some of the timeless stuff that endures year after year.

(In case you’re wondering, I think I’ll hold off on introducing her to the lunatics dancing The Time Warp for just a few more years.)

10 Awesome Halloween Videos to Watch With Your Kids

10 Awesome Halloween Videos to Watch With Your Kids • Little Gold Pixel

1. Skeleton Dance

There’s nothing like a bunch of bones dancing around. It never, ever gets old.

2. Spooky Spooky

I normally hate music specifically tailored to toddlers/preschoolers. But this song is not only tolerable, it’s enjoyable. It could have something to do with the theremin or the deliberately cheesy graphics. Whatever it is, you won’t be sorry. (Unless of course you can’t get the song out of your head. It’s addictive.)

3. Monster Mash

It was a graveyard smash.

4. Anything Can Happen on Halloween

Nostalgia overload. I am unapologetically a huge Worst Witch fan, and this song will always symbolize the first cold, overcast days of fall, when the leaves are changing color and we spent the afternoon hanging Halloween decorations in the windows of our house.

5. Mickey Mouse Haunted House

Disney knows what its doing with the dancing skeletons. And Mickey Mouse. This cartoon features both.

6. Donald Duck Trick or Treat

Donald Duck gets what’s coming to him when he plays a trick on Huey, Dewey and Louie.

7. Scooby Doo’s Headless Horseman of Halloween

Really, any Scooby Doo episode would suffice for Halloween viewing.

8. Headless Horseman Song

The part where Ichabod Crane is peppering his egg forever? Perfection.

9. Dance Magic

Consider this video a gentle nudge into the awesomeness that is Labyrinth. This film made my Movies My Kids Will Watch list, and I’ve been singing this song to Alexa since she was an infant.

10. Egyptian Melodies

It’s like Skeleton Dance, but with mummies.

What Do You Think?
I am curious — do any of these videos bring back heavy nostalgia for you, too? Any obvious ones I left off the list? Let’s discuss in the comments below.

I keep getting phone calls for “the doctor.” In fact, 99.9% of the time my work phone rings, it’s someone asking for the doctor.

Strangely enough, I got a few calls today on my cellphone for people ALSO seeking “the doctor.”

It’s perplexing, really. Is it a Doctor Who thing? Is it a drug dealer thing? Or is it a legitimate medical emergency? Should I urge them to dial 911 instead of being so flippant by retorting “the doctor isn’t in”?

There is a time and place for jokes, of course. This is the right time, and certainly the right place.

And you have to take over:

Or in the morning, when it’s time to get dressed for school, and she is frustrated with her shoe selection because she doesn’t want to wear sneakers, NO WAY, she wants to wear something like this …

So you are forced to put your foot down and give her valuable life advice, like:

You can’t fight every battle because you have battles of your own.

When you realize laundry day is tomorrow and you are working with a limited selection, it’s like:

When, in your haste to pack your kid’s lunch, you realize you forgot to pack your own, it’s like:

When you are in the zone at work, and everyone all of a sudden demands your attention, it’s like:
