And the countdown continues in my quest to watch and find something inspiring in every single one of Yahoo’s 100 Movies to See Before You Die.
Hans Gruber: You know my name but who are you? Just another American who saw too many movies as a child? Another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks he’s John Wayne? Rambo? Marshal Dillon?
John McClane: Was always kinda partial to Roy Rogers actually. I really like those sequined shirts.
Hans Gruber: Do you really think you have a chance against us, Mr. Cowboy?
John McClane: Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker.
Man singlehandedly fights off terrorists in a high-rise. Man is also a grumpy, foul-mouthed, chain-smoking, near-alcoholic whose marriage is constantly on the rocks. You don’t have to be perfect to be a hero. Now that’s inspiring. Also, Bruce Willis is one of my celeb crushes, so there’s that.
Li Mu Bai: Like most things, I am nothing.
I don’t recall being too impressed with this film about unrequited love when it first came out. I mean, it’s slow-paced, it’s a little unrealistic, people “fly.” Just not my cup of tea. We re-watched it, and I … still feel underwhelmed. But I tried to look for something inspiring, and I found it in Jiao Long’s character, a wild teen who doesn’t let anything hold her back, even if it almost gets her killed — not an arranged wedding, not a desert thief who stole her comb, not a sword master. She’s truly fearless.
