Freebie Fridays is a weekly feature on Little Gold Pixel in which I share a free printable or design resource — art printables, wallpapers, etc. — for you to download and enjoy.
Lately I’ve been painting very flat, simple portraits of women using a limited color palette. From there, I decided to take this sentiment and play around in Illustrator with a flat vector style of illustration.
Some of the best illustrators at this game (and my inspiration) include Malika Favre, Olimpia Zagnoli and Cajsa Holgersson. They each bring their own unique element. Malika is a shadow master. Olimpia is amazing with curved shapes. Cajsa plays with patterns effortlessly.
For this experiment, I kept it as simple/graphic as possible. I resisted my natural urge to add texture. The color palette is limited, which I think keeps the illustration fresh.
At first I wanted everything to be geometrical, including the hands. But when I started drawing the fingers, I found that I really enjoyed the very primitive shapes I created, and that perfect symmetry isn’t necessarily as interesting.
