One of our weekend rituals is to fire up the Zillow app on our cellphones, project it to our TV and go house hunting.

So many things you can learn about people, especially if they choose not to pay for staging.

Examples: there’s no place for shoes in your entryway, the kitchen hasn’t been touched in 30 years, and the majority of people have no idea how to decorate around a TV.

And make no mistake, you SHOULD decorate around your TV. A black box shouldn’t be the focus for an entire wall.

Here are a few tricks that will turn your TV wall from a Don’t to a Do.

4 Ways to Decorate Around a TV

The Shelf

You’ll be taking plenty of shelfies after you install a picture ledge above your TV and line it with your favorite art or knick-knacks.

Hang the ledge about 5-6″ above the TV, or what looks like the Goldilocks height to you: Not too high it looks like a mistake, and not so low that it looks like, well, a mistake.

If you have vaulted ceilings, hang a second ledge above the first ledge. Double-decker leaning gallery wall for the win!

The Equalizer

Do you like symmetry?

If so, you’ll love The Equalizer.

You’ll mirror your frames (they should be the same size, if not the same style) on either side of the TV. Above the TV, you’ll want one long piece. Or several smaller pieces that are all the same size and shape to form one visual piece.

Placing a large houseplant on either side will help balance out The Equalizer.

The Camouflage

This wall art is like camouflage for your TV. Is it there? Where is it? Fumble for your remote control and turn it on just to make sure it’s still there.

Joking, joking. But seriously, building a giant eclectic gallery wall around your frame will help it blend in better.

Plus, this wall can keep growing to take up an entire wall, if maximalism is your thing. It’s in right now, and I’ve seen a lot of great examples, such as this one.

The Black Frame

Lastly, take your TV gallery wall to the next level by choosing only black frames to mimic and thus minimize your TV.

Bonus if you add some beautiful digital art to your TV screensaver — it becomes a piece of art, too.

Tip: Samsung created a beautiful TV that’s on my wish list called The Frame. It already looks like a picture frame that has matting inside and comes equipped with beautiful works of art that display when you’re not watching TV. Not only does The Frame come in black — it also comes in white, beige and walnut frames (so you can truly make it blend in and not look like a TV at all!).

Need help decorating your walls?

You might be inspired to start this project, only to feel yourself deflate later when it comes to picking out art and figuring out where to hang it. Trust me. I know.

Something that seems like it should be easy on the surface can actually become extremely difficult when it gets down to the nitty-gritty.

I created a system to help combat that doubt, and I’d love to help you with your unique, personal gallery walls. Find out more here.
