Some movies are so easy to sink into time after time. Take “Love Story,” for instance. I’ve watched it beginning to end so many times I can’t even count. I’ve written about it here before, too.
There is a certain cheesiness to it, and the “love means never having to say you’re sorry” line bugs me to no end. (Tell me I’m not alone in this. Love means someone is worth apologizing to if necessary!) Also, let’s not forget the melodramatic ending that makes me cry every. single. time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s coming.
What I love most about this film is the style. It’s so timeless. The montages are what all montages should be made of. The long takes, oh, don’t even get me started on them.
My favorite cinematic moment is when Oliver says “I’ll be normal as hell” after he finds out about Jennifer’s illness. Then he walks like a zombie down the streets, with the signature music cutting in and out with the sounds of car horns and other traffic noise.
Or the scene in which Jennifer says she wants to go to the hospital, and they walk silently across the snowy field for what feels like forever.
Ah, such stylish tragedy.
What about you — do you have a favorite movie that you become transfixed with every time you watch it?
