My Netflix queue served up two incredibly stylish films this time in my quest to watch the 100 Movies to See Before You Die. Where to start …
Talk about a laugh-out-loud movie. There are tons of moments that are inspirational — and Diane Keaton’s wardrobe alone deserves its own entry — but two moments really stick out in my mind. First, the split-screen therapy session in which Diane is sitting on a fabulous MCM lounge chair with even more fabulous green shoes. The second is a scene where they are walking at dusk with the silhouette of a bridge with green lights in the background. I couldn’t find a screen grab of this, and it bums me out.
I always wondered what the big Bette Davis fuss was, and now that I’ve finally seen this movie, I can say I’ve joined her fan club. She’s fiesty, she’s sarcastic, she’s elegant, she’s got mad style. In the scene above, she puts a critic in his place by toasting to him with a breadstick, then ferociously biting it in half. In another of my favorites, she downs two “very dry” martinis in one gulp and announces, “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night!” What a great line.
