100 Movies: 74, 75

I took a long hiatus, but the countdown continues in my quest to watch and find something inspiring in every single one of Yahoo’s 100 Movies to See Before You Die.

Today, two classics that have very obvious inspirational messages. Can I find something else to inspire me, something less profound and more trivial, perhaps?

George Bailey: Well, you look about the kind of angel I’d get. Sort of a fallen angel, aren’t you? What happened to your wings?

We all know the story of the man on the verge of suicide who is sent a not-quite angel to show him that his life is worth living. If we forget this story, TV reminds us every December by playing the movie virtually nonstop. In a nutshell, George’s very existence keeps his entire town of Bedford Falls running smoothly. Without him it becomes a mean place called Pottersville. A quaint if not exaggerated idea. I doubt Los Angeles would cease to exist without my presence, but then again I do not have Jimmy Stewart’s distinct voice. Now I have been told I have a lovely singing voice, but I am lacking that “it” voice, the one that will force comedians to do impersonations of me and people to pay homage to me via Facebook. Now that’s inspired.

Dorothy: Oh, please! Please, sir! I’ve got to see the Wizard! The Good Witch of the North sent me!
Guardian of the Emerald City Gates: Prove it!
Scarecrow: She’s wearing the ruby slippers she gave her.
Guardian of the Emerald City Gates: Oh, so she is! Well, bust my buttons! Why didn’t you say that in the first place?

The premise: a girl wants to get away from Kansas and ends up being transported to another land during a tornado, wherein she meets witches, scarecrows, tin men and lions in her quest to return to the very place she so despised. (As a Kansas native myself, I could draw parallels to my own life here … but that would be a topic for a very good psychologist to tackle, I think.) There’s no place like home, yadda, yadda, yadda. But did anyone notice that the key to getting into the Emerald City was the glittery ruby slippers? Fashion is important, y’all, even when the flying monkeys are out. So we should all be inspired to wear a little bling bling on our feet. You never know what doors your shoes will open.
