25. Make my own baby food.

Crossing an item off my birthday goal list.

It’s been too hectic around here to try making much of our own purees for Alexa. I made a batch of sweet potatoes when she first started eating solids, but she was kind of lukewarm about eating and the potatoes went to waste.

For the past few months I’ve been very picky about the food I buy for Alexa, checking the ingredients. If they are not simple (carrots and water, for example), they do not get near my baby’s mouth. I’ve also been collecting jars, knowing someday I’d start making my own baby food.

Well, that day finally arrived on Monday. I did it the old-fashioned way, no fancy gadgets. I’m happy to report that she loved both batches of food! … And so did I (shhhh, I tested both recipes and they are delicious).

Apples and plums: Cube a few apples and plums, add to saucepan with enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle a tiny bit of cinnamon on top, cover up and let it cook. When apples and plums are tender, take off heat and let them cool down. Once cool, blend apples, plums and cooking water (I used a regular old blender) until smooth, adding water for desired consistency. I left the skin on (good fiber), and the texture didn’t bother Alexa at all.

Curried carrots: Throw a few handfuls of baby carrots into a saucepan with enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Add a pinch of curry powder, cumin and cinnamon, cover up and let it cook. When carrots are tender, take off heat and let them cool down. Blend, adding water for consistency.

I can’t wait to try more blends this weekend! Any ingredient ideas? I’ll share the recipes I come up with if you’re interested.
