This isn’t the most original craft on my birthday list. There are no shortages of tutorials out there on how to make your own cake stand (just scour Pinterest if you don’t believe me). Funny enough, this is something I have been wanting to do for years, but somehow I had convinced myself that it was out of my league.
Last summer Rubyellen posted about a cake party she threw and it inspired me because she set out mismatched plates and candlesticks/vases, a few tubes of superglue, and her guests made their own cake stands. Just like that.
It still took me more than a year to attempt it for myself. Seriously, if you are on the fence, just do it. This took me all of five minutes.
This vase has been hanging out solo in my bookshelf for a long time, and the salad plate was purchased from Pier 1 a million years ago. It’s time to buy new salad plates anyway because this one was the last of its kind to survive two moves and our slippery fingers. So these two lonely souls are about to get well-acquainted once they meet …
Mr. Glue Gun.
The glue gun was the only thing I didn’t have on hand. I know, who doesn’t have a glue gun, for crying out loud?!? I’m slowly but surely amassing a craft supply box. Give me some credit; I’m starting from ZERO.
Oh, and the instructions: glue the top of the vase to the bottom center of the plate. Let it sit upside down till glue dries. The end.
I told you it was easy! Although, be forewarned: It took a lot more glue than I anticipated. Do not be afraid to pile it on. No one is going to inspect it when you turn it right side up. And if they do, you should fire them from being your friend because that’s just silly.
Oh, and the cake stand? It can hold things other than cakes.
