I’ve been enamored with modern serif fonts for months now — nearly a year.
And since I’ve started using modern serifs in my own design work as well as in recent client work, I’ve noticed more and more typeface designers creating ever-better versions.
How exactly do you know a modern serif when you see it?
It’s highly subjective, obviously, but the new modern serifs actually have a bit of a retro/nostalgic vibe to them. Sometimes I sniff a hint of Danielle Steele book cover circa 1980s, if you catch my drift. But with that retro aesthetic, the new modern serifs bring a classic rich vibe, too.
Other features include:
- Elegance
- Luxury
- Sophistication
- Elaborate ligatures
- Dramatic juxtapositions
These modern serifs can be found gracing wedding invites, social media templates and luxury branding. They’re also making their way back to book covers — even outside the romance genre!
