5 Beach Movies I Could Live In

I recently discovered something embarrassing about myself.

I cannot multitask if there’s a beach movie on TV.

You’re talking to the person who regularly blogs while “MacGyver” and “The A Team” drone on in the background. But put on “Fool’s Gold”? Scratch my entire productive evening. This beach movie craze is giving my dance movie craze a run for its money.

I know what you’re thinking. “Fool’s Gold”? It’s not like Matthew McConaughey’s tan torso won any Oscars.

My theory is that I’m due a vacation, and these gorgeous films make me want to dive into the screen.

Do you feel the same way about certain movies? Which ones could you live in?

Only eye candy need apply. No brain kale here, folks.

Fool’s Gold

How beautiful is that beach? The plot is twisted and insane, but essentially recently divorced couple Kate Hudson and McConaughey search for treasure near an island off Key West. There’s a lot of insanity, and Donald Sutherland is delightful as an eccentric multimillionaire, but the real star of this movie is the setting. And the yacht, of course.

Blue Crush

I’m not sure it gets more vapid than this movie, but by god it’s Hawaii and it’s gorgeous and it makes me want to learn how to surf. Surfer girls try to survive Spicolli style, on nothing but “cool buzz and tasty waves,” as they get ready for the surf competition. If you didn’t already want to live in Hawaii, you will after watching this film.

Cocktail

Oh, man. Remember when Tom Cruise was a dream boat instead of a nightmare? Or, rather, when he was an aspiring business owner who travels to Jamaica to raise the cash to fund his ventures. Then he meets Elisabeth Shue and for about 25 percent of the movie we’re treated to gorgeous scenery and lush tropical romance. Yeah, that’s the part of the movie I could live in.

Gidget

How cute and innocent and fun and sooooo California. Sandra Dee decides to ditch her “manhunting” friends to learn how to surf from a bunch of dudes (including one named Moondoggy). See also: the time I drew fashion inspiration from the film.

Into the Blue

Gorgeous cinematography awaits when Jessica Alba and Paul Walker go diving for treasure in the Bahamas but instead find a giant stash of cocaine. This is the only film that has ever made me consider scuba diving. (I have to muster up courage just to snorkel.)
