Welcome to a new season of the Wall Around the World series, where we go inside the homes of some amazing gallery wall stylists and get the inside scoop on how they choose their art and decor. Check back next Monday for the latest virtual tour!
Today’s boho eclectic gallery walls come from the U.K., where Danielle lives with her husband and her dog, Sid.
Here, Danielle shares the secrets to her home style, including her love of greenery.
On where she lives
I live in a suburb in Surrey, which is in the United Kingdom.
It’s very much a mixture of town and countryside, we are very lucky to have what are the Queens Gardens very close by, which are very beautiful and you will find us there most weekends walking our dog.
We have a little high street nearby with a really good fishmonger and butcher, and we have a 10-minute walk to our local town.
I work in the NHS and have done for 18 years, and it’s a job that I love.
I have 3 grown-up children and a rescue dog called Sid, who is the love of our lives, as well as our children of course!
I am passionate about interiors and it’s a subject that I love to talk about, read about, and learn more about.
My home is a Victorian property that was built in 1894.
I’ve lived here for 11 years now with my husband. It’s a mainly residential area with a mix of houses but predominately Victorian to ’30s and ’40s.
I love the high ceilings in our home, and the beautiful ceiling roses.
I also love the original sash windows, although not so much in the winter! Although we have made the best use of the space, I wouldn’t choose to have a conservatory — I would rather have a more permanent structure with large ceiling windows — but having said that, I love what we have done with it, and it’s a great place to hang out.
Fantasy house guest: If I could invite any celebrity over dead or alive, it would be Lauren Bacall, I even named my daughter after her! She led such a fascinating life. I think she would probably like the hard stuff like a whisky or scotch maybe. I have no idea what she would think of my style, but I would be happy if she said my home was welcoming and made her smile.
On her home decor style
I would describe my style as eclectic with a little touch of boho I think.
I’ve always loved a mixture of genres and styles, but this is what I gravitate towards the most.
I love that laid-back relaxed vibe, nothing formal or uniform, and lots and lots of greenery is essential for me.
On making decor decisions
For anyone interested in having a similar look, I would say, buy with your heart, and trust your instinct.
Don’t think about whether something is “on trend” but how it makes you feel and how it would look in your home.
Buy a lot of vintage, upcycle if the furniture is not particularly attractive or great quality, and lots of plants are essential, of course!
On boho eclectic inspiration
Pop culture influences: My all-time favourite film is “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and my favourite band would be The Arctic Monkeys. I guess popular culture has definitely impacted on design choices as we have a couple of prints in our home of musical icons, and prints that are musical lyrics or quotes.
Favorite shops: On any given day I try to shop small and independent where possible and have found many small businesses through Instagram. To mention a few: Curious Egg, Hilary and Flo, Cucumber Wood Candles, Tin Design and Lush Eclectic.
Finding inspiration: Décor wise I have huge admiration for Emilie Fournet, an interior designer, and Dee Campling, another interior designer I found through Instagram.
On the gallery wall process
When it comes to picking art I honestly just buy with my heart, and I don’t even think where it’s going to go a lot of the time, I just have to have it!
Once I have bought a piece, I will then think about what room it’s going to fit best with and what other prints are on the wall.
On her favorite wall art
My 3 favourite pieces of art are my favourites because firstly I love the image of course, but also because I like the story of the image and/or I have got to know the person behind the piece which makes it much more special to me.
Animal: My absolute favourite piece is called “Animal” and is by Pati Robins. It is a black-and-white photo of a war veteran who has PTSD, but his expression is showing his defiance and fighting spirit is still very much alive. It’s a very powerful image and a real talking point when people see it for the first time.
