Welcome to this month’s Feminist Friday, where I round up some of the best thought-provoking links, and we can discuss what’s going on in the zeitgeist. Our motto here: Feminism is for everyone.
Feminist Focus
In a moment of digital weakness, we decided to expand our binge-watching opportunities to include Hulu — mostly, I confess, so I could finally catch up on The Handmaid’s Tale.
If you’re up to date on this dystopian show, you’ll likely agree that season 2 hit on some very timely topics.
Families separated upon seeking asylum. Children torn apart from their mothers.
Though I’m sure it’s gut-wrenching for anyone with a human heart to watch, my 8-months-pregnant self could barely stomach the fictional series, let alone the real-life version of such events taking place at our borders.
An article in Slate paints the overall picture of how women are being treated by the Trump administration in crystal-clear terms:
“On Trump’s watch, women are simultaneously infantilized and demonized, seen as both desperate for government guidance and unworthy of its support, forced to give birth but reviled when they do, and deserving of physical suffering for almost any perceived infraction.”
Not quite as desperate as in the Republic of Gilead. But then again, why are we even this close?
