Welcome to the Wall Around the World series, where we go inside the homes of some amazing gallery wall stylists and get the inside scoop on how they choose their art and decor. Check back next week for the latest virtual tour!
Today’s neutral boho gallery walls come from Provo, Utah, where Aspen lives with her husband and two children.
Here, Aspen shares the secrets to her home style, including the magic of shopping the items in your own house.
On where she lives
My name is Aspen Merrill. I am 25 years old, born and raised in the beautiful state of Utah.
I’m a mother to the two sweetest boys and married to my sweetheart for 6 years now.
I have always loved anything style/decor related and have always been more on the artsy side. I did hair school my senior year of high school and graduated with my cosmetology license right when I finished high school.
I’ve always loved home decor/ interior design and finally decided to make an Instagram page December of 2017.
I’m now a stay-at-home mom, but I do have an Etsy shop selling my macrame.
I live in Provo, Utah. It’s a town about an hour south of Salt Lake City and is probably best known for the LDS college BYU. And of course the gorgeous mountains!
We have only lived in our home about a year, we are renting.
We should be here another year unless the owner lets us buy, which we would love!
My limitations are obviously quite a bit because we are renting, BUT our landlord has allowed me to paint, which is nice.
I really like the high ceilings and open layout. I do not love the carpet or some of the paint — but like I said I can change paint! So overall we love the home.
Fantasy house guest: This really is a tough one, but I think I’m going to go with Johnny Depp. I have been obsessed with him as an actor for such a long time, and I would like to think he would think my decor was dope, haha. And as far as drinks, I don’t drink but I could offer some delicious herbal tea for sure!
On her home decor style
I definitely couldn’t describe my decor as one specific style, but if I had to I would say eclectic.
But less specific would be, boho / mid century modern / Scandinavian / with a splash of vintage.
I love that my style is my own, I like to be on trend but also make it my own.
On making decor decisions
I feel like my style is always evolving, but I would just say the main things that make my style what it is, Neutrals neutrals neutrals, with little pops of color here and there. A mix of modern and vintage, and then just curate pieces that bring you joy and incorporate them into your home in fun ways!
Id like to think my home and my style is a direct reflection of who I am, so don’t ever feel like you need to be like anyone else, as long as you love what you have done that’s all that matters!
Pop culture influences: My favorite movie is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. My favorite music hands down is like big band jazz and anything from the 1930s-’40s. Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Billie Holiday, Amie Winehouse, etc. Does this play into my decor? I guess yes and no. I do love me some modern decor, but I will always love anything vintage as well!
Favorite shops: Recently my top places to find decor and furniture is actually Facebook marketplace and thrift stores! But I also love World Market, Target, IKEA, and home goods
Finding inspiration: A few of my favorites would probably be:
• @houseofsaaj ( she has been with me since the day I created my account and I always love pulling inspiration from her)
• @miss_rusticarrow ( Nikki shares my love for Black and whites, neutrals and plants. She has so much inspiration all throughout her home!)
• @cynthia_harper_ ( She is just the sweetest and her home is absolutely gorgeous , so much inspiration there as well! )
On the gallery wall process
I honestly just throw things together, I have never been one to plan things out exactly how I want them.
I find it fun to just wing it, and throw things up and see how it looks as I go!
I’m a big advocate for shopping your home as well and using pieces you already have to create something beautiful.
On her favorite wall art
Macrame: My macrame is of course always special to me because that’s something I make and create myself.
Dyed Tapestry: I absolutely love my dyed tapestry made by @Kaithurleyart. She is so talented, and it is the most beautiful focal point in my living room.
Mapiful map: I also love my @mapiful map in my bedroom. It’s of the town I grew up and has a special place in my heart.
