Yay! It’s Freebie Friday, which means I’m sharing this Pride rainbow flag free printable with you today.
Happy Pride Month, friends!
I wanted to celebrate all my LGBTQ pals by offering a free download, so instead of just making the art and uploading it, I did what I usually do when I start a new project: I fell into a rabbit hole of research and history.
Enter procrastination. Enter excessive Internet surfing.
However, this time I’m glad I spent some time reading up on the Pride flag origins.
I was just going to make a six-color traditional rainbow for this project.
But did you know that the original Pride flag (created in 1978 by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker) had EIGHT colors, each color with its own meaning?
This is what each of the original eight colors stood for:
Hot pink | = | Sex |
Red | = | Life |
Orange | = | Healing |
Yellow | = | Sunlight |
Green | = | Nature |
Turquoise | = | Magic/Art |
Indigo | = | Serenity |
Violet | = | Spirit |
Apparently the only reason Hot Pink and Turquoise were removed was because the fabric colors weren’t widely available for mass production.
What a travesty! I say let’s bring them back.
I mean, sex and art are very important parts of life!
