Today’s modern eclectic gallery walls come from Southern California, where Jamie lives with her family.
Here, Jamie shares the secrets to her home style, including her philosophy on changing things up.
On where she lives
I live in Southern California, in the Santa Clarita Valley, about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. In what would be considered the suburbs.
I’m a 52-year-old creative with two grown children and a hubby of 25 years.
I take homemaking and home creating very seriously; you can stop by our house anytime, and it will be presentable.
Decor and gardening are a passion and keep my creative mind quite busy.
I owned a small jewelry business for years where I took old discarded jewels and added new contemporary components to create new pieces.
I like to think I do the same in my home with decor.
We’ve only lived in this house for 3 months; we sold our previous home of 20 years.
This home is a rental so that created a whole different ball game for my decor choices.
It’s quite a bit larger than our previous home and has so much light with tall ceilings.
I love the layout, especially the family room/kitchen. These two rooms are the heart of the home.
The walls are painted neutral which is great, not crazy about the tile downstairs, but I adore the wood floor upstairs.
Also, the kitchen is much bigger than my previous kitchen, but a bit dated with white tile counters. Love our large master and bath, too.
I also have a fabulous garden that keeps me very busy.
Fantasy house guest: I would invite Chrissy Teigen and John Legend. I would have her cook. I’ll make cocktails, and John could sing for us. They would probably think I’m some crazy plant lady who can’t decide a decor style.
On her home decor style
I would describe my style as eclectic. I am a toss up between Boho, Modern with a tinge of mid century here and there.
I’ve been smack in the middle of this style for five or so years.
On making decor decisions
Just stick with what you love and what makes you happy.
Also, I change things up all the time. If you don’t like it, change it.
Pop culture influences: Out of Africa, A Star is Born, I love artistically shot movies. My musical tastes go from Rock, Jazz, R&B, Classical and Pop.
Favorite shops: Goodwill, Target, Ross and independent small shops
Finding inspiration: I love Liz Kamural, The Novagratz, Kelly Wearstler. I tend to like styles more than designers.
On the gallery wall process
My process is I have no process.
I mean, in my decor in general, it’s just pieces I love. I don’t lay things out on the floor or diagram any of it, I just start hanging.
I think gallery walls should be filled with things that bring you joy and bring memories.
On her favorite wall art
Favorite things: My mother-in-law’s cockatoo paintings from the late 1940s; she’s 91 and still paints daily. A few thrifted paintings and pieces of art. Pieces I’ve created and ones I’ve purchased from other artists. I also use textiles on my gallery walls.
