Frame Game: Cozy Rustic Vibe for a Cabin Gallery Wall

Today’s wall was inspired by Molly, who is looking for ideas for her master bedroom.

The rest of the house has a cabin feel. Molly’s husband built most of the furniture, and they both really dig their woodsy vibe. She wants to continue in the same vein in the master bedroom — with perhaps a slightly softer touch.

In her own words:

“90% of our home looks GREAT but our master bedroom has always, always been a disaster. There’s definitely a “style” but beyond the bedding and the one dresser & nightstand matching that’s about it. Since we move so much with my husband being in the Army, it’s like we want the more lived in parts of the home to be set up & cozy first and our bedroom has always fallen by the wayside.”

“Our bedroom has always fallen by the wayside.”

Molly also asked for a gallery wall that forms a perfect square and incorporates shades of plum, gold and chocolate brown.

Well then. First things first: I didn’t end up with a square. I ended up with rectangles. I hope this is OK, Molly!

I really liked the idea of a super large, horizontal piece of art to anchor the wall, with smaller identical vertical pieces flanking on top and bottom to create the rectangle. You could always break away either the top or bottom row of smaller frames to create the square.

The main thing I wanted to convey was a modern rustic vibe, mixing in a few patterns and minimal elements to soften the cabin vibe a little for the master bedroom and to keep the outdoorsy art from getting too kitschy.

I put together two gallery walls because I was having so much fun, and I didn’t want to stop.

If You Wanna Splurge

Sometimes, no matter how long you search for the perfect free printable (hey, it might still be out there!), there comes a time in every curator’s life when you simply must pay for good, quality art. Please do. I believe in supporting artists!

This is what I’d buy for Molly. A heartwarming print from Femme Nouveau. I figured that, being an Army family, the idea of a moveable “home” would be poignant.

Also, because she mentioned being a Rocky fan, I can’t help but point to this amazing rustic Rocky art. Rocky fans, take note!

Hi, friends! I’m baaaaack … from hosting purgatory.

Moving to a different, faster hosting company was supposed to be a fairly quick endeavor, I was told. But then it dragged on and on and on. After a certain point, I was determined to trudge through to the finish line because, in Harold and Kumar fashion, we had gone too far.

toofar

But after several unsatisfactory dealings with the new hosting company (including a 2-hour wait for technical support! What!), I ultimately decided to cut ties before I moved my DNS, which no doubt would lead to even more nightmares. Now I’m back at square one, with my old host.

I made a few tweaks to the site, so hopefully you will notice a faster load time while I start my host search again.

But guys, lemme tell you — I’m getting a major lesson in patience. I have big goals for this year (launching a shop to sell premium and custom designs to you; creating a subscription-only vault of changing content, offering a line of easy/quick design courses). I’m getting excited just typing these words. And impatient!

This is a good lesson, though. Hang on tight, friends, and enjoy the ride this year. It’ll be worth it when we finally get to that finish line and you have access to all these new goodies!

About this Printable

This is an oldie but goodie. I sent out the color version to the newsletter last year, and when I looked at it today I thought it might be cool in grayscale. Turns out, it’s REALLY cool in grayscale. Enjoy!

Note: The color version is now available for purchase.

Do you remember when you were a kid and everything was a favorite, even shapes?

For some reason I always loved the parallelogram when I was kid. I think because it had a really long name and seemed sorta unstable just leaning there like that. Plus it reminded me of the uneven parallel bars, which I never quite mastered in gymnastics because I was too busy doing 5,000 handstands against a wall (damn that bad balance of mine).

I find myself returning to the two most basic shapes as I get older: circles and triangles. I don’t know what this means, but one can only presume that I’m about five years away from batting kids off my lawn with a broom.

Hey, at least I’m too hip to be square.

(No offense if you love squares; squares are a really boring solid shape.)

14 Romantic Script Fonts

This time of the year really tests my design sensibilities.

I’m the kind of person who wears black every day, who flat out told her husband that stuffed animals or other “normal” tokens of affection are not necessary for Valentine’s.

I’m the kind of person who makes snarky valentines cards. (exhibit A & exhibit B)

I’m the kind of person who can barely scratch out her name on a piece of paper anymore — not the kind of person to add curlicues to my doodles.

Still, I confess …

I do love a good script font. It has to be good, though. I’m picky like that. Nothing terribly frou-frou or precious because the goal is to get them to swoon, not vomit.

I sifted through thousands of fonts on my computer to show you my very favorites for those times you want to be romantic.

Maybe type out your love poems? Whisper sweet nothings via type? Tis the season, after all.

Free Watercolor Hearts Clip Art + Free Love Printable

Don’t you love it when you find a happy surprise on your computer? I painted these hearts who knows how long ago, scanned them and then completely forgot about them.

Then, as luck would have it, I came across them two weeks before Valentine’s Day. Perfect timing, eh?

I couldn’t resist adding “love love love” (as sung in the opening of “All You Need Is Love”) and making a printable for you. Also, I created individual heart clip art for your various personal projects.

Speaking of The Beatles, aka my favorite band, I was overjoyed when Spotify added their catalog a few days before Christmas. Best. Present. Ever.

I have no fewer than 10 different hand-selected Beatles playlists, including one with their best love songs. Enjoy:
