Let’s talk about summer fonts today — but first, a little aside about what I’m supposed to be doing right now instead of playing around with season-accurate typography.
In the design and art world, we are supposed to work a season or two ahead of time.
Christmas in July, anyone?
I always have the best intentions to start sketching out fall and winter art during this time. I pour myself a cup of iced tea, sit next to the window that radiates heat from the 100-degree weather outside and … nothing.
Seriously, how anyone focuses on snow and plaid when it’s sweltering and they’re wearing shorts is beyond me.
This is the time of year I can’t help but play with my personal collection of Totally Beachin’ Summer Fonts™ (heh heh). See my Vacay Vibes free printable for example.
These are the fonts that invoke a sense of tropical paradise.
You can picture yourself lounging on the beach with umbrella drink in hand, sand between your toes and salty air breeze running through your hair.
There’s no rhyme or reason to these fonts, really, because they run the gamut from scratchy markers to bouncy scripts to delicate lines to art deco sans serifs to chunky Miami-style serifs.
But you know a good summer font when you see one.
Know what I mean?
