Today’s wall was inspired by Debbie, who was looking for gallery wall ideas for the white wall over the living room couch.

“My fiancé and I will be getting married soon, so we need some help with decorating our first house together,” Debbie wrote.

“I love all shades of blue and green, and my fiancé’s favorite color is orange. We’d love something that mixes the fun, homey feeling of colorful prints with graphic black and white elements.”

“I have so many ideas, but I don’t know how to combine them into a cohesive gallery wall!”

Additional loves: geometric, natural things like plants being used in a graphic way, illustrations, abstract color field paintings, graphic use of typography, reading, cooking traditional Mexican dishes, traveling (especially Ireland because they got engaged on the Cliffs of Moher), hiking, watching movies, “Piano Man” by Billy Joel

Frame Game: How I picked the art

While I was researching Debbie’s decor, I was determined to “marry” their color tastes first and foremost to make a graphic geometric gallery wall.

I love how the abstract art pulls in blues and oranges right off the bat and adds some visual playfulness to the otherwise symmetric edges in the geometric art.

The two black & white pieces anchor the gallery wall, allowing the colorful pieces to “dance” around in an aesthetically pleasing semi-circle.

Debbie mentioned traveling, graphic plant elements and Mexican food, which led me down the path to those graphic depictions of monstera leaves, which are native to southern Mexico.

I toyed with the idea of adding some avocados. I love tacos to the nth degree, so I was almost desperate to add some food art to this gallery wall, but I ultimately decided not to.

It didn’t quite feel right for a living room wall. A kitchen, on the other hand? Definitely.

The green eye and the orange and black circles? Those are vintage IBM ads that look like high-end art! Can you believe that? I came across those and thought they were too cool for school.

If you’re ever on the lookout for free abstract art, you can check out my roundup. Also, go to free stock image sites.

You might be shocked by the offerings there, including the two images of paintings I chose for this wall.

The piece de resistance? The stock image of the Cliffs of Moher. Even though it’s organic — not as geometric as the rest of the wall — this piece really ties the entire wall together because of its beautiful green and blue hues.

In addition, the Cliffs of Moher have personal significance, which is always the most important thing when choosing wall art.

If You Wanna Splurge

Sometimes, no matter how long you search for the perfect free printable (hey, it might still be out there!), there comes a time in every curator’s life when you simply must pay for good, quality art. Please do. I believe in supporting artists!

This is what I’d buy for Debbie: “Piano Man” lyrics

Because Debbie loves graphic typography, and she shares a love of this song with her fiancé — I mean, is there any question that this print by Shaman Alternative would be perfect for them?

Edit, October 2020: It has come to my attention that this print is no longer being sold. Something like this Billy Joel cassette poster would be a cool alternative.

Great idea for a series of posts, you have great taste.

FYI the link to the Piano Man poster is dead, likely due to copyright infringement.

Thanks, Rick! You’re right — that link is defunct now. Here’s another poster I found that would be cool if you’re on the search for unusual Billy Joel art: https://www.etsy.com/listing/826459983/billy-joel-cassette-print-vintage
