Free Portrait Art for Your Gallery Walls

Now that maximalist decor is a thing right now (or, as I lovingly refer to it, Modern Glam), I’ve been sharing roundups of free printables that would be right at home in these luxurious, cozy rooms.

Previously it was free abstract art. Now it’s free portrait art.

Free Portrait Art: What is it?

What exactly do I mean by “portrait art”?

Any art that involves the human form: paintings (both vintage and modern), line drawings, creative photography, fashion sketches, etc.

For example, check out this gallery wall I saved on Instagram:

This wall is so well-curated it makes my heart pitter-patter.

I love that it’s all portrait art, but don’t feel overwhelmed by trying to re-create this look.

Many modern glam gallery walls sprinkle a few portraits in with a mix of other art for an upscale eclectic vibe.

Free Portrait Art: My Tips & Tricks

Keep reading for a few of my tips on finding free portrait art and getting comfortable decorating with it.

1. Search libraries for vintage portrait art.

I found several of these pieces by going to sites like New York Public Library Digital Collections and Rijks Studio searching for portrait art in the public domain or that are free to download for personal use.

Oftentimes these images are high quality, and will print well at smaller and sometimes even larger sizes.

Another good resource is finding free vintage art on sites like The Graphics Fairy.

2. Pick a vibe and go with it.

If you are drawn toward minimalist line art portraits, stick with a light and airy feel for the rest of your gallery wall to make it cohesive.

Conversely, if you like darker vintage paintings, keep that vibe going in the rest of your choices. Bonus points if you match tones (browns, wines, blues) to make your wall super flawless.

3. Don’t take yourself seriously.

Keep in mind, your home isn’t a museum! If you have a sense of humor about your artwork, you’ll rarely go wrong.

For instance, I know some people are drawn toward ugly or awkwardly painted portraits because the art makes them laugh, which is awesome.
