As I was adding items to my Instacart order this morning, I searched for coffee creamer. The app shot back choices for eye cream instead. At first I was offended — I mean, are the dark circles under my eyes that bad? But then I was intrigued because I actually did need some more eye cream.

I tell you all this to ask the question: Isn’t it awesome when something you didn’t know you were looking for pops up anyway, at exactly the right moment?

That’s what happened when I stumbled upon the woodworks of Steph Trowbridge. I wasn’t looking for it, not even thinking about it, but then I became obsessed with her salad servers shaped like hands.

Then this modern wood decor started popping up everywhere I went. Specifically, sculpted and curvy shapes. And I started to add them to my bookmarks because I was starting to amass quite the collection of links.

I had kitchen utensils, lamps, furniture, catch-all trays, stools and vases. Yep, it’s safe to say I was hooked.

Why do I think this is going to be a trend that has lasting power? Simple. Modern wood decor works in some of the most popular decor styles right now, including modern coastal, boho and coastal boho, modern farmhouse, midcentury modern, and minimalist.

Sculpted wood was huge with the first wave of midcentury modern decor because wood in general played a large part in the style. Furniture and decor pieces were crafted out of teak, oak, elm, beech, walnut and rosewood, and many had an element of smooth waviness or curviness that I so adore.

Today’s modern wood takes a nod from the original MCM, and also expands its wood horizons to include rubber wood, mango wood and reclaimed wood.
